Aussie Jemima Montag has started her bid for an Olympic medal strongly in the women’s 20km race walk, as she rounds a bend in second spot after two kms down. She’s right up in the top of the mix of 45 women, who are far more staggered than the men were early on.
Jemima is looking to become Australia’s second Olympic medallist in the event after Jane Saville secured bronze at Athens 2004. And she’s in with a good chance.
In February, she broke the Australian record (her own) at the Australian 20km race walking championships in Adelaide with a time of one hour, 27 minutes and nine seconds. Her previous time, which was seven seconds slower, was enough for her to claim the silver medal at last year’s world championships in Budapest.
